Call to action: Help write ICPSR’s (metadata) love note to the future!

We agree with historian, filmmaker, archivist, storyteller Jason Scott, who said, "Metadata is a love note to the future." Keep reading to see how you can pitch in to help us write ICPSR's (metadata) love note to the future, too.

ICPSR provides detailed information (or "metadata") about our data collections to help users discover, understand, and use materials. These metadata, which include elements like title, principal investigators, summary, and methodology, are displayed on the home page of each study and are also made available as downloadable records.

ICPSR wants to ensure that these downloadable metadata records (sometimes also referred to as "metadata exports") meet the needs of our user community. To help us make improvements and prioritize new features, we would like to learn:

  • If you and/or your organization currently download ICPSR metadata records.

  • How well our downloadable metadata records meet your and/or your organization's needs.

  • What functionality and file formats you and/or your organization prefer when downloading metadata records.

In only 5 minutes, you can help us with our (metadata) love note to the future. Please share with other individuals in your organization, too! If you have any questions, please email Mike Shallcross at shallcro@umich.edu. We sincerely appreciate your input!

Thank you,

ICPSR Metadata and Preservation Team

Going to “Stats Camp” this year? Register for #ICPSRSummer by May 15 for an early payment discount!

With over 80 workshops to choose from, online or in-person, the ICPSR Summer Program is the best place to learn quantitative methods. Register before May 15 and save on the four-week sessions! Build your own curriculum and explore options from the introductory to the advanced.

Our short workshops start May 16, and run through August. One or two weeks long, these are the perfect way to take a deep dive in a particular topic. Registration for short workshops closes 4 days before the workshops starts, so save yourself the trouble of counting days and register today!

As part of the short workshop schedule, the Summer Program works with projects across ICPSR and ISR to hold sponsored workshops, with free or reduced registration fees, that focus on a project or archive, like the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the Monitoring the Future study, or the Health and Medical Care Archive. Visit our short workshop schedule for more information on these and how to apply.
