The School of Public Health exists to help our neighbors near and far. Service Day puts that into practice with one mass day of volunteering on Saturday, March 28, 2020. Service Day connects the School of Public Health community - including students, alumni, faculty and staff - by promoting health and engaging the community. Groups and individuals will volunteer in their local communities while representing the School of Public Health. It is centered around a project that can help make a difference in your local community. Examples include volunteering at a food bank, painting a community center, and planting a community garden. Join us! Service Day provides students with an engaging and rewarding day, alums an opportunity to connect and build a Michigan community away from Ann Arbor, while faculty and staff support their local communities and connect outside of the office.

Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church - 502 Leith St, Flint, MI 48505

Overview: The Flint water crisis continues to expose communities in Flint, MI to harmful levels of lead, forcing Flint residents to be deprived of clean and safe drinking water. Join us to distribute cases of bottled water to some of Flint’s most vulnerable residents at housing complexes for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. This service event will provide you with an on-the-ground perspective of the Flint water crisis, allow meaningful interactions with community members, and begin to connect themes of racism and health inequity to a real-world problem in Southeast Michigan. The community partners for this service event are water crisis first responders Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and Salem Lutheran Church.

Timing: Carpools will be arranged. Meet in SPH I lobby at 8:30 am for carpools to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (502 Leith St, Flint, MI 48505). 1 Carrot Way, Ann Arbor, MI 48105

Overview: Food Gatherers rescues several tons of food daily that volunteers help us process, inspect and sort. Since we depend on food donations from the community, we aren’t always sure what we’ll be getting from one day to the next. We receive various, last minute items, and though we often improvise, we have adequate work areas and will provide all necessary training. Volunteers  generally help us sort food (such as produce), stock our pantry with canned goods, repackage bulk items, help us salvage/wash damaged products (such as a case of juice boxes with one that is leaking), and work with us to keep the warehouse and trucks clean and food-safe.

Timing: The day will begin with lunch at Food Gatherers at 1:15 pm (provided by the School of Public Health), followed by a brief training session promptly at 2:00 pm to begin the volunteer activity . The volunteer activity will conclude at 4:00 pm. (Please note: 12:45 - 4:30 pm time listed above allows time for lunch and travel to- and from Food Gatherers.)

Dress code: It is recommended that volunteers wear comfortable, casual attire (no sleeveless shirts). Non-slip, closed-toe shoes are required. It is recommended to dress in layers as the warehouse may be chilly. Some jobs require a hat/hairnet. Food Gatherers will provide hairnets, but you may bring your own hat (baseball cap, knit hat, bandana) if you wish.

Family: To register any family members who are interested in joining you at your Service Day site, please email Whitney Vojtkofsky (whitdix@umich.edu).

School of Public Health Alumni: If you are interested in participating in Service Day this year, we would love to have you join us!
