The global population is rapidly ageing. By 2050, over one in five people will be over the age of 60, up from just one in eight in 2015. Out of this age group, over 20% suffer from a psychological or neurological disorder, including depression (7%), dementia (5%), and anxiety (4%). Age-associated risk factors for mental disorders include reduced functional capacities due to mobility loss, frailty, or chronic pain, as well as grief, isolation, and loss of social or economic status. While physical and mental health are known to impact one another, mental health problems are underdiagnosed, or remain untreated due to associated stigmas.
This Collection welcomes original research on the mental health of older adults, including the incidence, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses.
This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3.
