NextGen of Data Stewardship in Spotlight at 2023 ICPSR Biennial Meeting

We’re still savoring the memories from the 2023 ICPSR Biennial Meeting. A few quick takeaways:

  • This year’s theme was NextGen ICPSR, and sessions covered topics including “Understanding Methods Metadata,” “SOMAR: Exploring the Innovations of the Social Media Archive @ ICPSR,” and “Marketing Data Services.” We are planning webinars for those who could not make it to the meeting in person.
  • The ICPSR governing Council, in parallel, met for its fall meeting, where the Council took care of consortium business and thanked outgoing members who are at the end of their terms (Dave Armstrong (Chair) Western University; Bobray Bordelon (Past Vice Chair) Princeton University; James Doiron, University of Alberta; Kristin R. Eschenfelder, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Mark Hansen, Columbia University; and Ken Smith, University of Utah).
  • The ICPSR Council recognized ICPSR Innovator of the Year, Bing She, chief architect of the Research Data Ecosystem. Biennial Meeting members also gathered to honor the 2023 recipients of the Flanigan, Miller, and Simmons Awards.
  • This year’s Biennial attendees not only learned more about ICPSR, but they also got to weigh in on the future of the ICPSR website user experience.
  • From the ICPSR Trivia session: Are we cat or dog people? The answer is yes.
  • Good things always happen when ICPSR people gather to focus on the future (which, we remind you, is here)!

New Data Archive Supports Consistency in Social Science Research into COVID-19

A new topical data archive at ICPSR is enabling researchers to design more effective studies of the social, behavioral, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID measures archive allows data users to search and compare questions and variables used in COVID-related studies, in order to incorporate them into their own research studies. Studies in the archive have been used to examine stress, substance use, internet access, partisanship, financial hardship, mitigation policies, and many other topics. [More]

Faces of ICPSR: Rachel Huang

Meet Rachel HuangQ: What is your favorite part of your job?

A: Data releases! Preparing data for archiving and secondary analysis requires lots of behind-the-scenes work with multiple collaborators, so it's satisfying to know that we, as a team, amplified the impact of the research data by making them available, findable, and usable to future researchers and beyond!
