2018 Michigan Ice Hockey Schedule

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team announced on Friday (June 13) its non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2018-19 season. The schedule sees the Maize and Blue staying in the state of Michigan throughout its non-conference competitions as all away games will be against in-state opponents.

Michigan opens up the season against Vermont at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Wolverines swept Vermont last year over two contests in Ann Arbor, 4-1 and 3-2. The Maize and Blue have only one loss all-time against the Catamounts, which came in 2016 in Burlington, Vermont.

The next day (Oct. 7), the Wolverines will host an exhibition game against the University of Waterloo at Yost Ice Arena. This will be the third game between the two teams as they last met in 2013, with Waterloo coming away with a 2-1 win. They first met in 1996, with Michigan coming away with an 8-2 victory.

Michigan will host the United States National Team Development Program U-18 Team for its annual exhibition matchup on Friday, Oct. 12. The series returns to Yost after the Maize and Blue traveled to Plymouth, Michigan, last year to claim a 7-3 victory.

On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20, the Wolverines play a home-and-home series against the Broncos of Western Michigan. The first game will be played at Yost Ice Arena, while the second game will see the Wolverines head to Kalamazoo, Michigan, for Saturday's matchup. This will mark the first time these two schools meet since both schools left the CCHA in 2013. Michigan is 42-13-2 all-time against WMU at Yost Ice Arena through the 57 games played.

The following weekend, Michigan will welcome St. Lawrence University to the friendly confines of Yost Ice Arena for the first time in nearly a decade. Michigan has won eight straight games against the Saints dating back to 1962. U-M has yet to lose a game to St. Lawrence that is played outside of the Saints' hometown of Canton, New York. The Wolverines hope to continue their winning ways against the Saints on Oct. 26-27 during the weekend series.

Next, the Wolverines will pack their bags and head to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to face off against the Lakers of Lake Superior State on Nov. 2-3. Michigan has been victorious in 32 of the last 39 meetings against the Lakers, but the Wolverines have had trouble on the road, tallying only 19 wins in 45 road games throughout the series.

Michigan will take part in the annual Great Lakes Invitational over the holiday break, which again will take place at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit for the second consecutive season. The 54th annual GLI tournament matches U-M against in-state rival Michigan Tech on Dec. 30, with a noon puck drop. The winner of this contest will play the victor of the Michigan State vs. Lake Superior State matchup for the championship on Dec. 31. The Wolverines are 125-94-5 all-time against the Huskies since the programs started playing in 1927. This matchup will see Michigan head coach Mel Pearson battle his former program for the first time since leaving Tech to make his return to Ann Arbor in 2017.

Michigan will host Merrimack for one game on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019. It will be the fifth all-time meeting between the two schools, with the last contest coming in 2006 with Michigan winning, 9-2. Michigan is undefeated in the series, winning by two goals or more in each meeting.

One change has been made to the conference schedule. Instead of the Maize and Blue traveling to South Bend, Indiana, for a weekend series against Notre Dame on Jan. 4-5, the teams will play only one game that weekend. Michigan will travel to South Bend for the Jan. 5 contest against the Fighting Irish, while the second game of the series is now scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 12.
