ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team topped No. 17 Wisconsin, 2-0, in a Big Ten Conference match on Thursday night (Sept. 20) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines were paced by goals from their senior leaders, Reilly Martin and Ashley Calcagno.

The win over the No. 17-ranked Badgers marks the second straight time that Michigan has defeated a ranked Wisconsin team as it took down the No. 9 Badgers in double overtime Sept. 24, 2017.

Martin netted her fifth goal of the season and her first game-winner of the season in the first half for Michigan, while Calcagno scored her first career goal for the Maize and Blue with the security goal in the second half.

Sophomore Hillary Beall returned from injury to earn her second career shutout with five saves on the night between the pipes. Michigan outshot Wisconsin, 11-7, putting seven of those shots on goal.

Wisconsin was led by Lauren Rice, who tested Beall on two occasions and Cella Maia and Murtha Cameron, who each put one shot on net. Jordyn Bloomer took the loss in net, making five saves and giving up two goals.

With the first 12 minutes of the match being played on the defensive end of the pitch, the Maize and Blue found its first offensive push of the match in the 13th minute. A free kick was sent into the upper part of the 18-yard box and bounced onto the foot of Martin, who worked her way around a defender and took a left-footed shot from 12 yards out that bounced off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net to give Michigan a 1-0 advantage.

Sophomore Nicki Hernandez looked for her seventh goal of the season when she peppered the net on three occasions in the first half with two shots on net and a header attempt that sailed wide in the 33rd minute.

Freshman Meredith Haakenson took one final shot in the closing seconds of the first half that was saved by Wisconsin. Michigan took a 1-0 advantage after the first 45 minutes of play, outshooting the Badgers, 6-3.

Early in the second half, Michigan added its second goal of the night on a Calcagno one-timer off a corner kick into the upper-left corner of the net in the 68th minute. The Badgers attempted to cut their deficit to one late in the match off a corner kick, but Beall came up with the save at her feet and the ball was able to be cleared to keep the shutout intact.

Michigan was able to hold off the Badgers the rest of the way to claim victory in its first Big Ten Conference home match of the season.

U-M will take to the pitch next on Sunday (Sept. 23) when Minnesota visits U-M Soccer Stadium for a 2 p.m. conference contest. The game also will be streamed live via BTN Plus (subscription required).
