Funding Sources for Your Organization/Programs

Finding the necessary money and resources for holding your event or program can often be as time consuming and difficult as the planning or implementation. The Student Organization Guidebook outlines funding policies and resources across campus including fundraising, donations, raffles and University support. 

Below are listed some offices and departments that regularly fund student organization events.  Many of these sources are specific about what types of events and organizations they will fund, so please note the restrictions listed under the “Special Instructions” category for each source. Be sure to visit their webistes for more detailed information.


CENTRAL STUDENT GOVERNMENT (CSG)

Availability: Year-round
Criteria: CSG has two types of funding: general student organization funding through the Student Organization Funding Committee (SOFC), and startup funding for new student organizations through Wolverine Consulting Group (WCG). CSG will generally not fund food/beverage, t-shirts, or capital goods unless they are integral to the event or service, and will not fund gifts, scholarships, or newspaper ads in any circumstance. 
Time Frame:  Rolling funding
Maximum:  Usual maximum is $10,000 per semester from all CSG sources. WCG awards widely vary based on startup costs. Average SOFC award is from $500-700 but varies based on funding application.
Payment Method:  For SOFC: Reimbursement; for WCG: transfer to SOAS account

LSA STUDENT GOVERNMENT (LSA-SG)

Criteria:  Will never fund for-profit events, charitable donations, staff salaries, or illegal activities. Will typically not fund speaker salaries or transportation costs. See our website for more details.
Time Frame:  1-2 weeks
Maximum: $2,000.00 per event, $6,000 per cycle
Payment Method: Reimbursement
Special Instructions:  Must complete an LSA SG BAC Funding Application.


OFFICE OF ACADEMIC AND MULTICULTURAL INITIATIVES (OAMI)

Criteria:  Priority will be given to proposals of merit that assist in the creation of an academic multicultural environment, particularly innovative programs and collaborative efforts between student organizations across cultural backgrounds. A low funding priority will be placed on proposals where food costs comprise a substantial portion of the budget.
Time Frame: 2 to 3 weeks
Maximum: varies
Payment Method: Transfer, but a report including receipts must be filed with OAMI after each event

UM LIBRARY

Criteria: Information about you and your project and a line-item budget that shows how your requested funding will be used. 
Maximum: $1,000

Special Instructions: As part of this program, you’ll be expected to:

  • Engage with library experts as well as library services or resources
  • Participate in a meeting with a library mentor 
  • Provide an itemized final budget
  • Either give a presentation about your project, or write a blog post, or both
  • Include the library logo or name on related project materials, such as posters, websites, and event programs
  • Complete a feedback survey

ARTS AT MICHIGAN

Availability: 5 cycles, deadlines in Sept, Oct, Nov, Jan, and Feb.
Criteria: All proposals must: Employ peer-to-peer leadership and expertise to promote undergraduate student learning through the arts; Instill a sense of the power of the arts to enhance understanding, build communities, and transform lives; and Create a significant impact on student life and learning at UM.  In addition, proposals should meet one or more of the following criteria: expose students to unfamiliar art forms and communities; utilize the arts as means of addressing challenging topics; increase understanding of or proficiency in the arts; and involve diverse communities for cultural exchange.

Special instructions: Grant funds cannot be used to pay for refreshments or transportation.


ARTSENGINE

ArtsEngine Funding Website
ArtsEngine Student Org Support Website

Several different opportunities: 

  • Student MicroGrants award up to $1,500 in support of interdisciplinary student projects which incorporate the arts as a central theme or component. Preference will be given to projects that engage at least two collaborators from at least two different schools and colleges.
  • Arts Integrative Interdisciplinary Research (AiiR) Grants support graduate student research projects that integrate the arts or design with other disciplines, especially those in engineering and the sciences. Individual grants up to $3,000 can support existing research efforts as well as new areas of inquiry.
  • ArtsEngine supports student organizations through frequent, small (up to $250) project-based grants, especially those that are being pursued by interdisciplinary student organization or are themselves interdisciplinary in nature.
  • Jumpstart & Bridge support - (orgs that are less than 3 years old) - Up to 10/year – up to $500 each
  • ArtsEngine sponsorship - (orgs that are 3+ years old) - Up to 5/year – up to $1,000/award/year

GINSBERG CENTER FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEARNING

Criteria: Recognized undergraduate and graduate student organizations planning community-based initiatives. Priority is given to those who have not received funding from Ginsberg in the last three years.

RACKHAM STUDENT GOVERNMENT (RSG)

Criteria: RSG Funding is expressly intended for the support of graduate student organizations and initiatives and therefore only organizations with a significant graduate student membership are eligible to apply for funding through RSG.  RSG will not fund food, alcohol, parties, club sports, and excessive honoraria: prefers to fund academic or cultural graduate student related events.
Time frame: 3 to 4 weeks
Maximum: No limit
How Paid: Transfer or check
Special Instructions: Must file an online RSG funding request form, and must present request at an RSG meeting funding requests are heard by the RSG at the last meeting of every month.


OFFICE OF MULTI-ETHNIC STUDENT AFFAIRS (MESA)

Criteria: Student organizations seeking to further the mission of MESA will be considered. MESA promotes student development and empowers the campus community around issues of diversity and social justice through the lens of race and ethnicity. Please read and review our guidelines prior to submitting your application. Please visit the MESA office website to learn more and obtain an application.

Time frame: At least 10 days in advance of program/event date 
Maximum: $2,00 per semester/ $4,000 per academic year

Special Instructions: MESA's funding process is an interactive process designed to help your organization be intentional and successful in your programming efforts. Submitting an online application (via MaizePages) is only one step in the process; a representative from your organization will be required to meet with MESA staff before and after your program. CENTER FOR WORLD PERFORMANCE STUDIES (CWPS)

CENTER FOR THE EDUCATION OF WOMEN (CEW+)

Criteria: Grants are available to student organizations at the University of Michigan to host events or initiatives that celebrate and/or provide support to the international student population. Grants can be used to support events, initiatives, or to enhance pre-existing programming.
Time Frame: 2-3 weeks
Maximum: Per Semester: $2,500 Max, per Student Organization or Department; Per Academic Year: $5,000 Max, per Student Organization or Department. Grants will vary based on the submitted budget and the availability of funds, but requests should be a minimum of $400.

WOLVERINE WELLNESS- HEALTH EQUITY GRANT

students impacted by campus health disparities, Wolverine Wellness wants to help! Student
organizations must demonstrate programming is aimed at advancing the mission of Wolverine
Wellness: “All students deserve equitable access to wellness: societal, cultural, historical, and
environmental factors fundamentally impact health. We are committed to building a culture of
well-being that is accessible to all.” Please read and review our guidelines prior to submitting

HAVEN HALL POSTING WALL
Bake sales: Registered groups may hold bake sales in Haven Hall, but must apply for space, visit this page.

CENTER FOR CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT
Bucket Drives: Groups may hold bucket drives on the Diag to raise money for charitable causes.  CCI coordinates the use of the space and issues permits but does not provide buckets.  To hold a bucket drive, you must also schedule either an info table or large event.  There is no cost to reserve an info table space on the Diag, but large events require event insurance (at a cost).  For more information and to submit a request, visit this page.

COLLEGE GOVERNMENTS OR DEPARTMENT
College Governments: Often individual college governments will fund activities directly related to their college.
University Departments: Departments may contribute to an event or activity that is directly related to its field of study. Contact individual departments for more information.
