On Friday, May 13, 2016, the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts was visited by 20 Chicago high school students—participants in the OneGoal program.
As its name suggests, OneGoal’s sole prerogative is helping students graduate from college, particularly students from low income and underrepresented households. As part of its mission, OneGoal educates its students using academic teacher coaches, data-supported curriculum, and college resources (like campus visits) from universities, including the University of Michigan.
The group’s trip to campus was sponsored by alumni from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA).

LSA Recruiting Coordinator Richard Cleare was enthusiastic about giving students the experience of quality college living, “It’s truly a privilege and honor to partner with Michigan alumni who value access to higher education for underrepresented students. We want OneGoal students to gain the confidence that a rigorous college education is a viable option for them and that the University is committed to equipping them with the tools to achieve academic and personal success.”

The OneGoal students received presentations on a number of college topics, including admissions, school culture, and the importance of diversity at the University. Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education Angela Dillard presented on the advantages of U-M as a whole, while Harold Waters of the Comprehensive Studies Program spoke about the history and impact of diversity at U-M. Later, Cleare spoke on the behalf of the college and its diverse offerings.
Other presenters included Dana Nichols of the Sweetland Writing Center, Robert Gordon of the Newnan Advising Center, and Stephen Nabors of the Office of Financial Aid.
Students were also treated to an authentic U-M housing and dining experience at Mosher Jordan, where they were able to experience the day-to-day life of a Michigan student. During their free time, they were also taken on a campus tour and took it upon themselves to visit the Big House before leaving campus.
The experience was made possible by generous Michigan alumni. Joan (A.B. ‘87) and David Evans (B.G.S. ‘85) provided financial sponsorship, while the current CEO of OneGoal is LSA alumnus Jeff Nelson (A.B. ‘04). Additionally, the OneGoal Host for the weekend was School of Education alumnus Jacob Caplan (A.B.Ed.. ‘11).
