Description

This workshop is free and open to anyone interested to learn how to access curated socioeconomic data in ethical ways. In this workshop co-organized by the AAG and The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), we will take a look at ICPSR’s data archive from a “geospatial” perspective. The ICPSR is an international, member-based association of more than 780 academic institutions and research organizations. ICPSR maintains an archive of more than 250,000 research data files in the social and behavioral sciences.

Geographers may find their data archive of interest because its data resources often contain spatial information, opening the potential for mapping, geocoding, and spatial analysis. The workshop will consist of an overview of ICPSR, followed by a demo on different ways of searching for geography-related data in ICPSR’s archive and a few examples of data containing geospatial identifiers. Finally, we will provide an overview of other scholarly services at ICPSR that help members in managing their data responsibly and ethically, such as the development of ICPSR’s researcher passport, virtual data enclave (VDE) infrastructure, leadership and training for the social science research community in data access, curation, methods of research data analysis.

Bing She (ICPSR) and Coline Dony (AAG) will take any questions from attendees related to searching and accessing ICPSR data as well as questions on how to manage your data responsibly and ethically.
